As an artist, it’s not uncommon to suddenly feel a rush of inspiration. For me, this usually comes after a period of rest: a time where I’ve finally had a moment to stop the grind, reflect on past work, set goals for the upcoming year, and lean into developing and refining the work I want to go forth and create.
This past winter was no exception. Knowing a rebrand was on the horizon, I wanted to design a shoot that felt fresh, unique, and scroll-stopping. And one I could own. (Haven’t you heard? Styled shoots with 15 photographers fighting for their lives over the same content is not the way, sis!)
It’s hard to explain the process, but the best way I can describe it is this:
2am. In bed. Brain racing. BOOM. A vision. An idea.
“I have to write this down,” I tell myself as I squint at my Notes app with one eye and tap in my thoughts.
Typically this is followed by days of clipping inspiration from magazines, saving quotes and musings found in coffee table books I’ve collected over the years, collecting fabric swatches and Pantone chips, and arranging everything I’ve gathered onto a neat little moodboard. This practice is truly my therapy, my bliss.
Spring was approaching and throughout my conceptual process, I mulled over how little we see a bride in a color—how little we tend to see actual color in wedding designs as a whole. This shoot was meant to be captivating and different—so why not reinvent green and red?
Next came the vendor team. Probably the most important part of executing a vision. Not a collection of who is convenient, but a strategic placement of talent that will not only fully understand a vision, but who will fall in love with it, add to it, and produce work they are beaming to share.
